Important to have women at decision making level: Gender Minister

Minister of Gender and Family Zenysha Saheed Zaki has said that despite numerous academic achievements by women, the percentage of women in the workforce, still remains a minority. She made the statement addressing a special function held to launch Hope for Women's book, 'Ran Muiy'.

Minister Zenysha noted the importance of having women at the decision making level of the community. She also said that cooperation from all parties are necessary to expand the role of women at the decision making level.

The book released by women's rights NGO Hope for Women, details achievements of women pioneers in the country.

Maldivian women have taken great strides in terms of socio-political empowerment. Jobs which had been labelled exclusively male, such as political positions in the cabinet and government, public office, and even being airplane pilots are no longer exclusively male. Although Maldivian women make exemplary students and generate model results, the number of women in high positions still remain low.
