Political parties receive funding from the state in accordance to the strength of their membership, according to the Elections Commission of Maldives.
This year as well, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) received the most funding from the state as the party that boasts the most members. The party is set to receive MVR 10 million, for its 39,502 members. Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), with 29,350 members would receive MVR 7.5 million. Furthermore, Jumhooree Party and Maldivian Development Alliance has been allocated MVR 2.7 million.
The state does not need to issue funds to political parties that have less than ten thousand members, according to the Political Parties Act. This year, the government has allocated MVR 23 million, as funding for political parties.
