Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has said that final preparations are underway to begin shore protection work in the newly reclaimed area at Velana International Airport.
In the government's mega project, carried out to develop the airport, 65 hectares of land has been reclaimed. The work on reclaiming land required for the new runway, international passenger terminal and new seaplane terminal to be developed under the airport development mega project, has been contracted to Gulf Cobla, a Dubai based international dredging and reclamation contractor.
Gulf Cobla began practical work on the project on the 25th of July 2016. 65 hectares of land was reclaimed as part of the project, using three dredgers, according to MACL.
All work on land reclamation had been completed by the 10th of June 2017. The announcement was made by the Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited, Adhil Moosa, at a special function held Thursday. Addressing the function, Adhil described the capability to complete the project despite various challenges as a huge progress. Adhil said that now, final preparations are underway to carry out work on protecting the shore of the newly reclaimed area. Adhil said that the aim is to begin work before the end of June.
"All equipment required for the work has been brought to Male'. A total of 7000 sheet piles were brought to Maldives, to be used for shore protection work," Adhil said.
