Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assured that the 7000 housing units to be constructed under Phase II of the Hulhumale' Development Project will be completed and occupied before the end of 2018. The 7000 housing units consist of 16 towers of 25 floors each.
Currently work on laying the foundations for the tower blocks are underway. Noting that the previous administrations have been unable to provide adequate housing in the greater Male' region or address the issue of congestion and housing, the Minister said that with the importance President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom gives to social housing, the development of the thousands of housing units under Phase I and Phase II of the Hulhumale' Development Project are being swiftly implemented.
In addition to these 7000 housing units, Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has also awarded projects to seven local developers to develop pure residential apartments in Hulhumalé. As per the development period stipulated in the agreements, these apartments too are expected to be completed by 2018. Practical work on some of these flats are already underway.
The Minister stated that majority of the work on the flats being developed in the North and South of Maldives is also complete and final preparations are underway to hand over housing units to members of the public. Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure stated that, they are working with banks and financial institutions to ease the loan payment process for prospective recipients of housing units.
