President establishes Commission on State Assets Recovery

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has today, by a Presidential Decree, established the Commission on State Assets Recovery. The decision was made following deliberations at the Cabinet meeting held on Sunday. At the Cabinet meeting, members highlighted that recovery efforts of lost State assets were not being undertaken optimally by the respective institutions.

The main purpose of establishing the Commission on State Assets Recovery is to analyse efforts taken by the institutions to recover State assets highlighted in reports published by the Office of the Auditor General and the Anti-Corruption Commission. The President has granted full authority to the commission to independently carry out its duties, and take action accordingly.

Furthermore, President Yameen held a meeting at the President’s Office with the members of the Commission on State Assets Recovery.

Speaking at the press conference after the cabinet meeting, Attorney General Mohamed Anil reiterated that a huge amount of money needs to be recovered by the government. The Attorney General stated that under the commission established today, the issues will be reviewed and sent to relevant authorities for investigation. Attorney General Anil further stated the President has provided full authority to the State Assets Recovery established for a year, to independently carry out the duties and to take actions accordingly. The commission has to send a report to President every three months, according to Anil. However, he mentioned that the mandate of the commission was limited to already established cases and would not be investigating any new cases.

The main purpose of establishing the Commission on State Assets Recovery is to analyze efforts taken by the institutions to recover State assets highlighted in reports published by the Office of the Auditor General and the Anti-Corruption Commission. The Commission on State Assets Recovery will be chaired by Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed. Other members of the commission include Mohamed Mujthaz, Khadeeja Hussain, Dr. Ibrahim Mahfooz and Mohamed Saleem.
