Upgrading FADs used in Maldivian waters

Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee revealed plans to bring changes to the design of fish aggregating devices installed across the country. One of the biggest government investments related to improving fisheries is, the installment of fish aggregating devices in Maldivian waters.

In order to make the best use of the fish aggregating devices, changes need to be brought to its design. The changes include, increasing the size of buoys used in the FADs.

According to the Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee, in order to improve the endurance of fish aggregating devices, it requires ugradation in design. In order to ensure that the FADs do not get washed away with strong currents, the anchors on the devices need to be bigger, he added.

The government installed the first FADs on October 27, 1980. This improved catch and decreased out of pocket expenses for fishermen.
