President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim have hosted the official reception on the occasion of the Maldives’ 52nd Independence Day. The reception was held at Dharubaaruge convention centre.
The President and First Lady met with those in attendance at the reception, and exchanged greetings in celebration of the auspicious occasion. Among the many guests this evening were, former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed, Vice President Abdulla Jihad, Speaker of the Parliament, Cabinet Ministers, Justices of the Supreme Court, Members of the Parliament, Diplomats, State dignitaries and Ministers of State. The reception was also attended by civil servants, schools children, officials from different government institutes.
Relaying messages related to the day, local officials noted the importance of remaining a sovereign state, which maintains the values of Islam. They also highlighted that the country should always work to keep at bay foreign influences which would take away the freedom and independence of the citizens. The officials emphasized that independence brings development and is vital for the prosperity of the country.
Other invitees at the ceremony included Ambassadors accredited to Maldives from Foreign States including Palestine, Pakistan, Kuwait, UAE, Bhutan, Philippines, France, Russia, United Nations Representative to the Maldives and other dignitaries from foreign states. They also conveyed greetings to citizens of Maldives on the auspicious occasion of the 52nd Independence Day.
The Foreign officials praised the development brought to the country and express sincere well wishes for the country, citing that they remain close friends who look forward to further strengthening relations with Maldives.
