SAARC adopts Colombo Declaration

South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) has adopted the "Colombo Declaration: Calling for Accelerated Progress on Key Regional Health Care Issues."

The declaration highlights key issues in the health sector in the South Asian region. The declaration was adopted at the ongoing meeting of the senior health officials of SAARC, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. At the meeting, discussions were held on features to be included in the declaration and on the achieving the sustainable development goals as a SAARC body as its ulterior objective.

Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim represented Maldives at the high level meeting. Minister Nazim delivered a speech on the achievements and challenges for the region in the health sector. During his speech, Minister highlighted the importance of health screening people who travel to Maldives from abroad, as to control the spread of communicable diseases. The Minister is scheduled to have further meetings to discuss the development of the health sector and had further discussions on obtaining aid from other nations for the sector's development.
