Import of heavy vehicles to Maldives see a significant rise

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has revealed that import of heavy vehicles has seen a significant rise with the ongoing government development projects.

2016 showed a record number of heavy vehicles imported to the Maldives, according to statistics of MPL. In 2016, 1047 units of heavy vehicles were imported to Maldives, which is an increase of 124% compared to 2015 and 360% increase compared to 2009.

MPL said that the increase in import of heavy vehicles is mainly due to the ongoing government development projects and increase in economic development projects in private sector. These projects include China-Maldives friendship bridge construction project, Male' Industrial Village project, Velana International Airport development project and the Hulhumale' Youth City project.

By July 2017, 450 units of heavy vehicles have been imported, according to the statistics.
