Workshop for supporting vulnerable communities held in Maldives

Resident Coordinator of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Shoko Noda expressed that Maldives has been a champion in leading the global policies and creating awareness among the nations of the world. She made the remark while addressing the inception workshop for supporting vulnerable communities in Maldives to manage climate change-induced water shortage project.

Speaking at the inception workshop for supporting vulnerable communities in Maldives to manage climate change-induced water shortage project, the Resident Coordinator of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Shoko Noda expressed that Maldives has been a champion in leading the global policies, creating awareness locally and internationally. She added that Maldives has done a tremendous job in calling for concrete and collective actions by the nations of the world.

Shoko Noda marked the inception workshop as the first important milestone achieved by the government. She added that the government of the Maldives has been at the forefront of climate action.

Speaking at the inception workshop for supporting vulnerable communities in Maldives to manage climate change, Minister of Environment and Energy, Thoriq Ibrahim highlighted the priority given by the government in providing the people of Maldives with safe water and said that before the end of the next two years, 75% of the population will be provided with sustainable safe water facilities.

In the face of climate change risks, The Green Climate Fund (GCF) supports vulnerable communities in Maldives to manage climate change-induced water shortages project aimed to deliver safe and secure freshwater to 105 thousand people which is almost 30% of the population of Maldives. This project is the first GCF-funded project supported by UNDP in the world. The five year project targets 49 islands across 13 atolls of the Maldives that continue to experience water shortages linked to low rainfall and extended dry periods brought on by a changing climate.
