Vice President notes the importance of media in nation building

Vice President Abdulla Jihad states that media has the vast potential of acting as a catalyst towards nation-building.

Addressing on the key note of the inaugural ceremony of the 16th Asia Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) General Conference, Vice President Abdulla Jihad stated that media has the vast potential of acting as a catalyst towards nation-building. The Vice President stated this while addressing the opening ceremony of the 16th AIDB General Conference.

In his speech, the Vice President stated that Media enables a participatory form of democracy and governance; it can also be interpreted as the fourth pillar of democracy. The Vice President highlighted that social media offers a level of flexibility that traditional media does not, and that the main distinguishing feature of new media, and social media, is the much higher level of interaction. To conclude his speech, the Vice President thanked AIDB for the organizations' continuous support in providing consultancy, assistance and training opportunities to build media professionals in all member countries.

Speaking at the opening of the conference, Deputy Managing Director of Public Service Media (PSM), Aminath Shaayan Shahid said that such events would promote the country in the international media and that this is an opportunity for Maldivians to develop and expand their expertise and talents.

The 42nd Annual Gathering and the 16th AIBD general conference and Associated Meetings is held at Bandos Maldives organized by PSM. The conference which is scheduled from August 21 to 23, has some major events lined up in the remaining days.

In the inaugural ceremony, AIBD Awards 2017 were presented in both TV and Radio. This year the awards were presented to AIBD TV Awards in two categories which are the Best TV Programme towards a waste- free society and Best TV Programme on bridging the gender gap. In addition to this AIBD Radio Awards were also presented in two categories which are for the Best Radio Programme on the journey of the Migrant and the Reinhard Keune Memorial Radio Award for Best Radio Programme on Fighting Deforestation.

On last day of the AIBD General Conference, the participants are scheduled to have an excursion day to the developmental areas of Maldives, including visits to the airport development area, the China-Maldives friendship bridge and Hulhumale'.
