French flag carrier, Air France has launched scheduled direct flights to Maldives. The first scheduled flight to Velana International Airport arrived from the capital of France, Paris. Air France will operate two weekly flights to Velana International Airport, on every Sunday and Thursday.
At a ceremony held at Velana International Airport to celebrate the inaugural flight of Air France, Ministry of Economic Development, Mohamed Saeed expressed hope that with the flight service, tourist arrivals from France will boost. Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed stated that Maldives will work to enhance trade relations with France in the future. The Economic Minister cited that noteworthy development are being conducted in Velana International Airport, adding that Airbus A380 will be able to land at the airport starting from August 2018.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador of France to Maldives, Jean-Marin Schuh reiterated the popularity of Maldives among French tourists. The Ambassador added the commencement of direct flights from France would ease travelling to Maldives. He noted that it will also simplify the process of fish exports to Europe.
In a statement issued announcing the decision to operate flights to Maldives, CEO of Air France Franck Terner said that the arrival of Air France in Velana International Airport strengthens the company's presence on top of the range leisure destinations.
Featuring business class, premium economy, and economy, Air France will operate a three cabin 777-200, to Maldives. The inauguration of the flights would mark the first of its kind, as until now, there has never been direct flights between the Maldives and France.
