There is no imminent threat of an attack- Defence Minister

Minister of Defense and National Security Adam Shareef Umar has stated there is no imminent threat of a terrorist attack against Maldives.

Assuring that the administration is always prepared to counter any such acts, the Minister reiterated the administration's commitment to countering terrorism. Answering a question by PSM News, the Defense Minister stated that, while countries with sufficient resources and well equipped defense mechanism are under the radar of terrorist, Maldives being a small island nation is not exempt from such threats.

The Defense Minister further stated that efforts by the current administration to eliminate the voices of terrorism and extremism are key in countering terrorism. The Defense Minister further stated that under this objective, security at the main gateway of Maldives, Velana International Airport, has been strengthened due to the inflation in the number of terrorist attacks targeted to airports around the globe.

Defense Minister further stated that Maldives has been collaborating with International Intelligence Agencies to attain knowledge on how other countries counter terrorism and extremism. The Defense Minister concluded his statement by stating that Maldives has been vocal about the fight against terrorism and radicalization at international platforms such as in the United Nations.
