Large amount of waste produced in Maldives is a great concern

As per the latest statistics of Minister of Environment and Energy, daily waste created in Male' region ranks at 1.2 Kilograms of waste per head while 800 grams of waste is created per head in other regions of the country.

In addition, the waste created per head on a daily basis in resorts are even higher with up to 3.5 kilograms of waste created per head. Addressing the issue, Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Ali Amir expressed concern over the amount of waste generated in Maldives even though the country is relatively small in size.

In this regard, Deputy Minister Ali Amir highlighted various steps taken to manage waste in the countries with a higher amount of waste to dispose. He said that several studies are made to manage and dispose waste produced in Maldives. As per this statistics, a total of 184 tons of waste is created daily in the Male' region, which is about 70,000 tons of waste per year. The amount of waste produced in other regions of Maldives reaches up to 193 to 200 tons a day. The number in resorts reach up to 60 tons a day, which sums up to 21,000 of waste produced per year.

As per the statistics, the major portion of the waste is contributed by waste created within households. Another major contributor is waste created from construction. The grand total mass of waste produced per year in the Maldives is at 170 thousand tons.
