Maldives expresses support for an Afghan-led peace process

Maldives has expressed support for an Afghan-led peace process with cooperation from its international partners.

Delivering the statement during the Plenary Agenda Item 39: The situation in Afghanistan, First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations, Ahmed Nasir stated that the Maldives remains encouraged by the strength, determination, and the enduring commitment of the people of Afghanistan for lasting peace and stability in the country. Durable peace and stability is only possible by involving all key stakeholders and also by allowing Afghans to lead the discussions to shape the future, added the First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations.

First Secretary, Ahmed Nasir assured that Maldives will always be with the people of Afghanistan extending support needed from Maldives.  Reiterating that the security situation in Afghanistan is undoubtedly the biggest threat to maintaining stability in the country, Ahmed Nasir stated that Maldives believes that the Government of Afghanistan needs more support from the United Nations, its member states and all stakeholders in improving the security situation of the country.

Furthermore, Maldives commended the Afghanistan Government for its perseverance and its steadfastness in combating terrorism and violent extremism, expressing the support for an Afghan-led peace process with the cooperation from its regional partners.

In addition, the First Secretary added that Maldives is pleased with the special focus Afghanistan places on empowering women, guaranteeing active participation in maintaining security, stability, and in the broader social and economic development of the country. Maldives believes that greater economic integration and collaboration from regional partners, including SAARC is paramount for the development of Afghanistan and to ensure the safety and security of its people, he added.

On conclusion, the representative of Maldives affirmed that safe, peaceful, and a prosperous Afghanistan is in the best interest of all its neighbours and the entire world.  He said that Maldives shared the vision of Afghanistan, as a peaceful nation, free from the clutches of terrorism and extremism.
