Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has emphasised on the importance of strengthening constitutional policies and services provided to women to further enhance the process of reporting cases of abuse.
A statement released by HRCM on the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women stated that even in this era major challenges are been faced when establishing equal and fair chances to women.
In this regard HRCM highlighted the lack of budget and resources provided for the prevention of violence against women. In the statement, HRCM shed light on the importance of providing proper training programmes to staff investigating cases of violence against women.
HRCM stressed on the importance of changing the perspective of the society on victims of such violence and called on the society to join hands to eliminate such atrocities and assist victims in reviving back to daily routines. Furthermore, HRCM called the governing bodies to take firm action against all types of acts which encourage violence against women.
The statement also noted the latest statistics on cases of violence against women filed at HRCM. As per these statistics, majority of the cases filed at HRCM are of physical, physiological and sexual abuse. In addition, several cases of harassment in work environment are also filed at HRCM.
