Provocative actions in Korean Peninsula must stop: Dr. Asim

Addressing the ceremony held in Hotel Jen, in commemoration of the golden jubilee since establishment of diplomatic ties between Maldives and Korea, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim called to stop all provocative actions in Korean Peninsula and maintain peace in the region.

Foreign Minister Dr. Mohamed Asim lauded the fast progress South Korea has achieved in a short span of time to become the 11th largest economy in the world.  Furthermore, Minister Asim highlighted that relations have nurtured between both countries over the past five decades and stated that relations have grown from strength to strength especially in the last couple of years.

Noting the recent developments in bilateral relations, the Minister also mentioned that trade volume has significantly increased with emphasis given on people to people contact. In addition, he called to stop all provocative actions in Korean Peninsula and maintain peace in the region.

Addressing the ceremony, South Korean Ambassador Chang Won-sam stated that both countries have been a steadfast and consistent partner both in bilateral and multilateral arena in cases of mutual interest. Noting the major boost in the number of South Korean tourist arrivals, Ambassador Chang Won-sam said that Maldives is famous as the paradise on earth among Koreans. In this regard, the Ambassador attributed the establishment of direct flights between Male' and Seoul in 2013.

High-level dignitaries from both Maldives and the embassies based in Maldives participated in the official reception. The South Korean Embassy also organised a cultural performance. The performance opened to public covered Taekwondo demonstration by Kukkiwon of Korea and Boduberu performance by 1438 Boduberu group.

Maldives and South Korea established diplomatic relations on November 30, 1967. The establishment of diplomatic relations between Maldives and South Korea initiated a strong bond of friendship and trust.

From the very beginning of the establishment of diplomatic relations, both countries have faced all challenges together.

South Korea remains as an important bilateral development partner to Maldives. South Korea has been contributing to Maldives through technical cooperation programmes, especially in the pivotal areas of the Maldivian economy such as fisheries sector and infrastructure development.
