Tidal surges affect islands in the north of Maldives

Tidal surges affect islands in the north of Maldives, early on Saturday, as a result of the cyclonic storm, Ockhi, which has been battering the South Asia region, the last couple of days.

As per information provided by the island Council of Aliffushi in Raa Atoll, the island has witnessed tidal surges from the Eastern side of the island in late hours of the night and has resulted in soil erosion. Due to the tidal surges and the rough sea, various damage has been caused on the boats and goods in the Eastern Boat Yard of the island. In addition, Island council revealed that 12 houses have been damaged due to flood waters. These houses have now been barricaded with sacks of sand. All electronic devices in houses where flood waters have entered have been taken to higher areas.

The island of Hoaraffushi of Haa Alifu atoll was also at the receiving end of damages due to the bad weather.  Nevertheless, the island council has stated that weather conditions are now stabilizing in the region.

The council further stated that various damages has been caused to houses and trees in the island due to the heavy rain and strong winds the island has experienced in the past few days.

Work on assessing the intensity of damages due to the weather conditions are now underway.

In the island of Ihavandhoo in Haa Dhaalu atoll walls have crumbled and tin roofs have been ripped off due to ths strong winds.

However, at Ihavandhoo, no additional cases have been reported since midnight.
