Environment Ministry contracts installation of new solar panels

Ministry of Environment and Energy signs an agreement with a China-based company to install solar energy panels in 26 islands of Shaviyani and Noonu atoll. The project would cost 12.1 million U.S. dollars.

The agreement to install the solar energy panels was signed by Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim and the Vice President of the China-based Sincom Sangrow Joint Ventures Ziao Zian Dong. Under the project, Sincom Sangrow Joint Ventures would install 2.86 Megawatts photovoltaic systems, 29 diesel generators of 4.86 Megawatts and 10 kilometres of cable system at the contracted islands.

Furthermore, the China-based company would also install 24 synchronising panel boards and 62 distribution boxes in the islands. Addressing the signing ceremony, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim stated that the problems faced in electrical shortage by residents of these islands would be eased with the completion of the project next year. Minister Thoriq further added that the project is expected to reduce the amount spent on electricity bills by the residents of these 26 islands. Addressing the ceremony, Managing Director of Fenaka Cooperation Ahmed Shareef said the utility company would stay consistent in providing support to the government in conducting projects for the betterment of the society.

Previously, the Environment Ministry had contracted to install solar panels in another 27 islands of Maldives.
