Maldives to promote safe and orderly migration

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim has stated that the Maldives has been working in promoting safe and orderly migration by cooperating and collaborating with state institutions and international partners. The Foreign Minister made the remarks in his statement published on the occasion of the International Migrants Day.

In his message published on the occasion of the International Migrants Day, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim noted that migration has been a way for individuals to seek better lives, throughout history. Foreign Minister Mohamed Asim emphasised that the international community needs to collectively improve how the issue on human mobility can be governed by responding to the biggest migrant crises the world has seen, as the world observes the International Migrants Day with the theme, Safe Migration in a World on the Move. Minister Dr. Asim stated that the Maldives has been working in promoting safe and orderly migration by cooperating and collaborating with state institutions and international partners.

The Minister highlighted that Maldives remains focused, and support a holistic approach to the important issues of governance of migration in all its aspects. Dr. Asim said that Maldives has adopted legislations, and regulations to strengthen our institutions in addressing the issues of smuggling of migrants, trafficking in person, protection and assistance to migrants and trafficked victims. He said that as a Small Island Developing State surrounded by the ocean, Maldives remains concerned about the impact of climate change, natural and human made disasters on human mobility and migration. The Minister concluded the statement by noting that Maldives is proud to support the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants which was adopted in New York in 2016.
