Salim: Maldives can win UNSC seat for 2019-2020 term

Speaking on Talk Maldives TV programme aired on PSM News, Deputy Permanent Representative to the Maldives mission in Geneva, Salim Waheed stated that he firmly believes that the Maldives has a strong chance in winning the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) non-permanent seat for the 2019-2020 term. The Deputy Permanent Representative expressed that it is one of the many reasons Maldives will win the non-permanent seat, reiterating the strong track record of Maldives in the international arena.

When asked about what Maldives has got to offer at the Council, Deputy Permanent Representative said that a lot will be offered by Maldives. He noted that when it comes to new and emerging threats in international peace and security, Maldives is the first to voice out. Maldives has a difference perspective in overcoming challenges faced in international peace and security and that is what stands out Maldives when competing to the seat, he added.

The Maldives is seeking election to the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member, for the 2019-2020 term, the election for which is scheduled at the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly to be held in New York, in October/November of 2018. This is the first time in its 51 years of United Nations membership that the Maldives has applied for membership to the United Nations Security Council.
