Maldives ready to practice death penalty: Home Minister

Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed has revealed that all procedures have been sanctioned to practice the death penalty in Maldives.

In an exclusive interview with PSM News, Home Minister Azleen Ahmed stated that all the legal obligations have been completed to execute capital punishment in Maldives. However, the Minister did not specify a date to practice the death penalty in Maldives.

Initially, the Maldivian Government aimed to practice the death penalty in Maldives by November 2017. The Administration said the Supreme Court of Maldives would be strengthened in the effort to execute the practice and stated that expert advice would be taken from the Islamic Council and the well established Maldivian Islamic scholars.

Capital punishment have not been executed in the Maldives since the country gained independence in 1965.
