MMA to establish convenient national payment system in Maldives

Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has announced plans to survey the status of payment systems in the country. In a statement, MMA revealed that in the first phase of the survey they would target the greater Malé region. The central bank has decided to conduct the first phase of the survey from January 6 to 11.

Providing information regarding the Payment System Survey, Senior Research Analyst of MMA Aishath Sajnee said that the survey aims to curb the use of cash across Maldives and establish the most convenient national payment system. The information on all aspects of national payment systems will be collected, she added.

Noting that different sectors will face different challenges while making payments, Sajnee highlighted that the survey would target payment systems in a multitude of major sectors including fisheries, infrastructure, trade, finance, tourism and telecommunications.

MMA has urged the community to contribute and cooperate with officials conducting the survey.
