Youth empowerment high on agenda in Maldives Japan talks

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim has stated that the prime focus of the talks held with the visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono was on the enhancement of programmes and activities held for the youth.

In an exclusive interview with PSM News after concluding official talks with his Japanese counterpart, Foreign Minister Asim stated that Japan has been a steadfast and consistent partner for Maldives in national development. In this regard, the minister highlighted Japan's contributions in fields such as education, infrastructure development and environment protection.

In the official dialogue Minister Asim and Minister Kono reviewed the program of cooperation between the two countries and agreed to work together to further strengthen and enhance the cordial relations between the two countries. The Ministers decided to convene an annual "Policy Dialogue" between the two countries aimed at transforming the relationship to a more mutually beneficial strategic partnership.

The Policy Dialogue will cover political, economic and technical cooperation as well as regional and international issues of mutual interest. The Visiting Foreign Minister of Japan, Taro Kono was received on arrival at Velana International Airport, by Foreign Minister, and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Minister Kono's visit to the Maldives coincides with a time where the two countries are celebration 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. This is the first official visit undertaken by a Japanese Foreign Minister to the Maldives.
