Maldives has remained as a reliable and consistent partner: Japan

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan Taro Kono has stated that Maldives is situated at a strategically important position and has always remained as a reliable partner of Japan in both bilateral and multilateral arena.

In an exclusive interview with PSM News prior to his departure from Velana International Airport after concluding his official visit to the Maldives, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono stated both countries discussed on the involvement of Japan in free and open Indo-Pacific strategy. The two parties also discussed on the North Korean nuclear and ballistic missile issue and extended talks in further pressuring the country to bring peace to the Korean peninsula, as per information provided by the Japanese Embassy in Maldives.

During the one day official visit, the Japanese Foreign Minister held separate meetings with President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Foreign Minister of Maldives Dr. Mohamed Asim. The prime focus of the official dialogue between the two Foreign Ministers was on the enhancement of programmes and activities held for the youth, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives. In addition, the official talks held at Kurumba Maldives focused on an annual Policy Dialogue between the two countries aimed at transforming the relationship to a more mutually beneficial strategic partnership.

Over the past 50 years since establishment of diplomatic relations between Maldives and Japan, both countries have been showcasing exemplary contribution in issues of mutual interest. Maldives and Japan established developed diplomatic relations on 14 November 1967.
