STELCO to connect electricity network of Male' and Hulhumale'

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has revealed that the development of an electricity network connecting Male' and Hulhumale' would be contracted to China-based Dongfang Electric International Cooperation, with the agreeement to be signed this month.

One of the key projects earmarked by STELCO this year is the implementation of uninterrupted electricity to all wards of Male' city. Under the first phase of the project, STELCO has planned the development of an electricity network connecting Male' and Hulhumale', which would cost USD5 million. The state utility company is scheduled to contract the project to China-based Dongfang Electric International Cooperation, with the agreement to be signed this month.

The isolated lands of Male' and Hulhumale' would be connected by a high voltage connection network of 132 kilowatts, as per information provided by STELCO. The company aims to proceed with the plan of an electricity network connecting Male' and Hulhumale', as part of the Fifth Power Project, which is the largest power development project to be conducted in Maldives.

The Fifth Power Project is expected to produce up to 50 megawatts of electricity to cope with the surging electricity usage in Male' and Hulhumale' by networking through China Maldives Friendship bridge. A fuel farm, a desalination plant and 6 generators with a capacity of 8.9 megawatts would be installed in Hulhumale', as part of the project, according to STELCO.
