Fisheries Minister meets his African counterpart

Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee has met the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of South Africa Senzeni Zokwana.

During the meeting with his South African counterpart, Minister Shainee enquired about the opportunities available in South Africa for the fisheries sector of Maldives. The discussions also focused on ways to protect and further enhance fishing rights for fishermen of both countries. During his visit to South Africa, Minister Shainee is expected to meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Africa. The discussions of the meeting will focus on supporting Maldives in securing United Nations Security Council seat for the 2019-2020 term.

The Maldivian Fisheries Minister is currently on a three-country tour of Africa, as the Special Envoy of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom as part of the international campaign to secure a United Nations Security Council seat for the Maldives. During the trip, Minister Shainee has met with cabinet ministers of Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa. Meetings and discussions would be held to seek support for the recommendations Maldives has proposed to include in the fishing guidelines for countries fishing in Indian Ocean, during the trip.

After concluding his trip to Africa, the Minister is set to arrive in Maldives on Tuesday.
