Preparations underway to implement Supreme Court verdict - AG

Minister of Defence and National Security Adam Shareef Umar announces that the government is moving forward with necessary preparations to implement the Supreme Court’s verdict.  

In a press briefing held by the government, Defence Minister Adam Shareef Umar called on all citizens of Maldives to prioritise peace and harmony of the nation.

Addressing the press briefing Attorney General Mohamed Anil revealed that Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef has been dismissed from his position upon failure to attend to repeated phone calls by President at this critical juncture. According to the Maldivian Attorney General, Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef was dismissed by the powers vested in the President. 

In addition, the Attorney General revealed that President Yameen has appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police Ahmed Saudhee as the Acting Commissioner of Police. Attorney General Mohamed Anil said that the government is in negotiation with the Supreme Court to assure the validity of the court verdict.

In addition to Defence Minister Adam Shareef Umar and Attorney General Mohamed Anil, Home Minister Azleen Ahmed and Chief of Defence Force Major General Ahmed Shiyam were in attendance at the press briefing.
