Environment Ministry procures five landing crafts

Ministry of Environment and Energy has procured 5 landing crafts specially designed and manufactured for waste management. The landing crafts were handed over to Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) by Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim.

Environment Ministry said 3 of the 5 landing crafts have a capacity to hold 400 tonnes of waste, while the remaining 2 have a capacity of 250 tonnes. The Ministry said the landing crafts are equipped with small jib cranes and will be used in the regional waste management for Zone 6 and 7 and to transfer waste to the Greater Male' region. Currently, WAMCO uses 50 vehicles in greater Male' region and another 25 vehicles in atolls for waste disposal.

WAMCO has improved and expanded its services within the past two years, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim noted speaking at the function. The Minister assured the government will continue to assist WAMCO in its efforts to establish waste management facilities and services across the country. Environment Ministry aims to establish dumping zones in all inhabited islands before the end of this year.
