Maldives sends condolences following tragic plane crash in Nepal

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has sent messages of sympathy, to Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina and Prime Minister of Nepal, Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli, following the crash of US-Bangla Airlines Flight BS211, at the runway of Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu.

In the message to the Prime Ministers, President Yameen expressed his profound shock and sadness after learning the news of the plane crash causing the loss of lives and injury to many, which included nationals of Bangladesh and Nepal. President Yameen extended deepest sympathies of the Government and the people of Maldives to the Prime Ministers, the Governments and the people of Bangladesh and Nepal. The President also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved families, and offered prayers for a speedy recovery for all who were injured.

Moreover, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim, in a tweet posted, wished a speedy recovery for all those injured in the plane crash. Maldives is currently in contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Missions in Dhaka and Islamabad in contact and monitoring the situation.

A Maldivian, who was on board the US-Bangla Airlines that crashed in Kathmandu, is currently being treated at a hospital in Kathmandu for injuries. The Maldivian is a medical student, studying in Nepal, according to authorities.

US-Bangla Airlines Flight BS211 was travelling from Dhaka to Kathmandu with 71 people including the crew, crashed at the runway of Tribhuvan International Airport, after attempts to land. While the cause of the crash remains unclear, an investigation into the crash is now underway.
