Government has no immediate plans to extend state of emergency

Minister of Legal Affairs at the President's Office Aishath Azima Shakoor has revealed there are no immediate plans of the Government to extend State of Emergency.

The extension of the State of Emergency declared on February 5 was according to the constitution of Maldives and with the advice of the National Security Council, said the Legal Affairs at the President's Office Aishath Azima Shakoor, in a press conference held to brief international media on the current situation in the Maldives.

While the State of Emergency expires on March 22, Minister Azima Shakoor said there are no immediate plans of the Government to extend the State of Emergency. The State of Emergency only applies to those who are under investigation in relation to the attempted judicial coup, emphasised the Minister.

Briefing the international media, Minister Azima Shakoor underscored the Supreme Court ruling of February 1 was issued with disregard to the constitution and stressed the State of Emergency does not have any effect on the daily routines of the law-abiding citizens of the country.

During the press conference, representatives of the administration briefed international journalists on the current situation in the Maldives. The press conference comprising of two sessions was held at the President's Office.

In this regard, the administration was represented by Minister for Legal Affairs at the President's Office Aishath Azima Shakoor, Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr. Mohamed Shainee, Minister of Tourism Moosa Zameer, Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed, Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Shiham, Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim and Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

The ministers also briefed the media on the latest developments on reconvening the all-party talks and shared information on the policies of administration in various economic and social sectors.

The press conference was attended by journalists from 10 news agencies.
