Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim has hosted a luncheon for Permanent Representatives of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). During the meeting, Foreign Minister Asim and the Permanent Representatives discussed enhancing cooperation between SADC and Maldives, including on sustainable tourism, fisheries, capacity development, youth development, and natural resources management.
The Permanent Representatives also informed the minister on SADC priorities at the United Nations, including on Security Council reform. Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim also met with several Permanent Representatives in New York, to discuss issues of mutual interest, especially with regard to the United Nations Security Council. The Maldives is campaigning for support in its bid to become a member of the Council for the term 2019-2020.
Minister Asim is visiting New York to speak at the High Level Meeting to launch the "International Decade for Action: Water for Sustainable Development 2018-2028" hosted by the President of the General Assembly.
