Maldives asks UN to take into account the consequences of climate change

Maldives has asked the United Nations to take into account the consequences of climate change and other non-traditional threats, in peace Building and sustaining peace.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives Dr. Mohamed Asim highlighted the changing nature of threats that are leading to instability impacting the peace and endangering security, speaking at the High Level Meeting on Peace Building and Sustaining Peace. In particular, Minister Asim highlighted the impacts of climate change, which are already impacting peace and security in some parts of the world.
The Maldivian Foreign Minister also noted the importance of adopting holistic approaches to preventing conflict and sustaining peace and said the link between development and peace is important. The Maldives believes peace and security, and development arms of the United Nations should work together in building capacities of the state, to enable countries to maintain order, to strengthen institutions and to promote democratic norms, according to the Minister.
The High Level Meeting on Peace Building and Sustaining Peace hosted by the President of the General Assembly is being held in New York from April 24-25.
