Foreign Minister returns after attending 45th OIC Foreign Ministers Session

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim has returned to Male' after attending the 45th OIC Foreign Ministers Meeting, held from the May 5-6, 2018 in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The theme of this years' session was "Islamic Values for Sustainable Peace, Solidarity and Development".

Minister Asim delivered a statement at the Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting during the session. In his remarks, Minister Asim reaffirmed that the Maldives would remain committed to the ideals and values of the OIC and that of the Muslim Ummah. He stated that the OIC must remain united in tackling the global problems faced by Muslim countries, including on Islamophobia, discrimination and in combating violent extremism. He said, partnerships across the various regions represented in the OIC are crucial to tackling the issues faced by the Islamic world.

The 45th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers also reviewed conflict situations in parts of the Muslim world, will discuss issues of international peace and security, Islamophobia, countering terrorism and violent extremism, humanitarian situations, and the situation of Muslim communities.

OIC is an international body comprising of 57 countries with large Muslim populations. The Council of Foreign Ministers is an annual gathering of the foreign ministers of member states to deliberate on issues of concern to the Islamic world. Maldives became a member of the OIC in 1976.
