Independence in Maldives is the result of upholding Islam: Ikram

Deputy Managing Director of Public Service Media (PSM) Mohamed Ikram Abdul Latheef has stated the secret of the long standing independence in Maldives is the result of upholding Islamic values and principles in the country.
Speaking at the awarding ceremony of the first ever international Quran competition, Al Nour Al Mubin, held in Maldives, Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Ikram highlighted the priority given by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to widen the Islamic religion in Maldives. Noting that several religious scholars have made visits to Maldives in the past half-decade, Deputy Managing Director Ikram said the number of visits by religious scholars increased within the past five years.
Moreover, Ikram mentioned the numerous works and institutions established in Maldives to provide Islamic education which results in the peace in the country. Continuing on, Ikram stated participation in international Quran competitions increased during the past couple of years. He revealed the international competition will be held next year during Ramadan adding preparations are now underway and the competition will be open for women as well.
Meanwhile, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ziyad said the Quran competition is a milestone achievement for Maldives. The Islamic Minister said participation of other Islamic countries in a competition organised by Maldives proves efforts of Maldives to uphold Islam are acknowledged by the international community.
The awarding function was attended by cabinet ministers, parliamentarians and senior government officials.
