President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has handed over the full authority of social housing flats neglected by the City Council to Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure. The announcement was made at a press conference held at President’s Office, attended by Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim and the Minister of Youth and Sports Iruthisham Adam.
President Abdulla Yameen made the decision following the request from the cabinet to hand over full control of the flats to the ministry after realising that City Council had neglected and failed to maintain the buildings for years. Following the decision of President, Housing Ministry is now responsible for maintenance and managing the social housing units of Male' and Villimale'.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated the President has also decided to provide opportunity to register as citizens of Male' and citizens of atolls living in Male'. Housing Ministry aims to manage and maintain flats under a better system.
Moreover, all Ministers who were in the press conference highlighted the poor condition of the social flats noting that several complains were received by the residents of the flats regarding the poor maintenance.
