President appoints Dr. Shaheem as his running mate for presidential election

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has appointed well-known Islamic scholar Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed as his running mate for the upcoming presidential election. The decision was announced at a press conference held by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
Chancellor of Islamic University of Maldives Dr. Shaheem formerly served as the Minister of Islamic Affairs and is recognised among the top religious scholars in Maldives. 41-year-old Dr. Shaheem has memorised the Quran and is also a licensed lawyer in Maldives.
Dr. Shaheem has received a bachelor's degree and master's degree in Shariah and was also awarded a PhD in Fiq'h and Usul-al-Fiq'h. He is a strong religious advocate promoting Islam as a moderate religion.
