Maldivian democracy must reflect Islamic principles: President

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated democratic system of Maldives must reflect the Islamic values.
Every country has their own unique democratic system, President Yameen noted addressing the citizens of Hoarafushi Island in Haa Alifu Atoll. In this regard, the President reiterated that any policy or ruling that is in conflict with Islam would never be allowed in the Maldives, and called upon everyone to always put forth national interest.
Addressing the public, President Yameen noted that the Maldivian people trust him to deliver on his promises and make the people’s dreams come true. President also conveyed his hopes that the people will continue to trust him in the future.
Furthermore, President Yameen shed light on the role of youth in bringing development to the nation and encouraged the youth’s participation in the different developmental endeavours being carried out across the country. Concluding the speech, the President shed light on the planned projects for next the presidential term and on the administration’s plans for the betterment of the people and increasing the country’s resources.
Furthermore, during the visit to Hoarafushi, President attended the ceremony to mark the completion of beach protection project in Hoarafushi Island. During the ceremony, the President unveiled the monument placed to mark the completion of this project.
The purpose of this project is to nourish, protect and prevent the areas of the islands vulnerable to erosion from further deterioration. The project was contracted to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) for over USD 1.24 million. The project includes construction of 570-metre rock revetment at the northeast side of the island and 230-metre rock revetment on the south-east side of the island.
The northern beach and north-east beach were also protected with seawalls as part of the project. The seawall to north of the island will cover 570 meters and the seawall to the north-east of the island will stretch 230 meters.
