Nominated running mate of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has met with religious scholars to secure support for the upcoming presidential election. The meeting held at Arabiya School was attended by over 50 religious scholars in Maldives. Some attendees of the meeting included President of Fatwa Council Mohamed Rasheed Ibrahim, President of Jamiyat-al-Salaf Abdulla and Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ziyad. Moreover, Minister of Home Affairs Azleen Ahmed also participated in the meeting.
During the meeting, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed requested the backing of the scholars in the upcoming election to secure a second term for president Yameen. Meanwhile, following the nomination of Dr. Shaheem as the running mate of the incumbent president, many religious scholars local and international, have expressed support and extended well wishes.
Elections Commission announced the presidential election will be held on September 23.
