Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) prepares to tar the runway of the airport being developed in Kulhudhuffushi of Haa Dhaalu Atoll.
The government of Maldives contracted the development of the airport to MTCC to develop an airport in Kulhudhuffushi of Haa Dhaalu Atoll. MTCC was contracted to complete the project by the end of the year.
Equipment needed for tarring of the runway has been brought to the Kulhudhuffushi, according to MTCC. Previously, MTCC concluded the land reclamation to develop the airport in January this year. In this regard, MTCC reclaimed an area of 15 hectares for the airport development project, which includes six hectares from the lagoon and nine hectares from the mangrove area.
Even though some challenges were faced in the process of land reclamation, MTCC overcame all such challenges and has begun preparations to construct the airport. The project of Kulhudhuffushi Airport development includes the construction of a 1,200 metre long and thirty metre wide runway, taxiway and an apron to park aircraft.
Kulhudhuffushi Island with a population of over 12,000 people is expected to be the economic hub of the region upon completion of the airport. The project which costs USD 12 million, funded by the state budget, was launched in November 2017 by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
