PSM implements special procedure to allocate airtime for candidates

Public Service Media (PSM) has implemented a special procedure to allocate airtime from PSM's channels, for political parties and candidates contesting the 2018 Presidential Election. Under this procedure, presidential candidates and the parties they represent would be awarded airtime from Television Maldives (TVM) and Dhivehiraajjeyge Adu, both at commercial rates and free of charge.

The procedure details ways in which airtime would be given free of charge for candidates and the means and rates through which candidates and political parties can purchase airtime from PSM's channels. It also notes that in order confirm airtime, candidates must ensure that the relevant documentation are submitted and the relevant receipt is received 48 hours prior to the time slot the candidate wishes to buy. Content aired under this special procedure must adhere to provisions in the News and Information Dissemination Code of Public Service Media, Anti-Defamation and Freedom of Expression Act, Maldives Broadcasting Commission's Content Guidelines, the Presidential Elections Act and the campaign regulations for the presidential election set by the Elections Commission.

PSM has met representatives of presidential candidates to share information about the company's procedure in allocating airtime. During the meeting decisions were made on which slots would be given to candidates by drawing lots.

Speaking with PSM News after the meeting, representative of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Ahmed Siddeeq applauded the initiative shown by PSM to fulfil this legal responsibility. Although representatives of MDP refused to comment, they too agreed with the decisions made and assured that they would be utilising their airtime. PSM's spokesperson for the project Aminath Hushama Ibrahim said, PSM would provide equal opportunities for both candidates.

Although PSM has implemented a special procedure to allocate airtime from PSM's channels for political parties and candidates contesting the 2018 Presidential Election, PSM wishes to note that the company would continue implementing its legal responsibility to spread news regarding affairs of the state.
