President calls for political differences to be kept aside to give way to national development

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom states the political dissension must not stand in the way of the development projects being brought to the community. The president made the remark while speaking at the function held to inaugurate the harbour in Nolhivaranfaru in Haa Alifu Atoll.
Noting the important role played by the state-owned enterprises in fulfilling the needs of the public, the president said that they have shown their real strength in the past 5 years. In this regard, he noted Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) alone has developed 57 harbours throughout the country, during the term of the administration, with only 25 harbours being developed during the opposition's rule.
In his speech, President Yameen called upon the opposition to clarify their pledges to the public. He also highlighted the challenges being caused by some who wished to influence the government. In this regard, the president noted that the Maldives needs a leader who will always uphold the Islamic principles, the country's constitution and rule of law.
Moreover, President Yameen stated the project to establish safe water facilities in Nolhivaranfaru will commence before the presidential election. Addressing the ceremony held to inaugurate the harbour of Nolhivaranfaru, President Yameen also revealed plans to commence a road development project in the island if he is elected to a second term in office.
Noting the previous governments have neglected the development of Nolhivaranfaru, the president highlighted the island has been included in the development plans of his administration. The president said more projects will be initiated in the island during his second term, as part of the all-inclusive development agenda of the government.
During the ceremony, the president inaugurated the harbour developed in the island. The project contracted to MTCC was completed at a cost of over USD 3 million. As part of the project, MTCC constructed a 324 metre quay wall and a 323 metre breakwater, in addition to a harbour pavement of 1165 square metres and installation of 16 lights.
The project was initiated as part of the second phase of the reconstruction of harbours and was funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).
