Maldives will become a notable country in the energy sector: Environment Minister

Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim has claimed Maldives will become a developed and a notable country in the energy sector, if President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom secures a second term in office. The environment minister made the statement at a ceremony held at the Republican Square to accept 35 electric generators from the government of China.
Speaking at the ceremony, Environment Minister Thoriq highlighted all the facilities that provide electricity services will be further developed if the president gets re-elected. The environment minister noted the president has pledged to provide 24-hour electricity services to all the islands in the country and revealed, during the past 4 years, the government has delivered 77 electric generators to the islands without 24-hour electricity. He said the government has exerted major efforts to develop the electricity services and upgrade the electricity network across the country.
Furthermore, the environment minister highlighted the previous administrations have not maintained the power houses over the years and noted the electric generators and other equipment were in need of replacement. The minister said the government established Fenaka Corporation Limited with the aim to guarantee 24-hour electricity services to all the islands and highlighted the transformation of the energy sector in the country. He called on the public to be vigilant and support the developmental efforts of the government and noted the close ties Maldives share with China, one of the largest economies in the world.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed revealed the electric generators were provided by the government of China to Maldives within a period of 3 months. The economic minister appreciated the efforts of the Chinese government in assisting in the development of Maldives.
In the ceremony, Fenaka handed a memorabilia to the First Lady of Maldives Fathimath Ibrahim for her continuous services to the benefit of the community.
