Maldives concludes biggest ever waste awareness programme conducted in the world

Maldives has concluded the biggest ever waste awareness programme conducted in the world. The programme initiated commemorating the World Clean-up Day 2018 commenced in Addu City. The clean-up was participated by JCI, "Let's Do It Maldives", Addu City Council, Maldivian Red Crescent, Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO).

In less than 3 hours, over 120 bags of different kinds of waste were collected, including plastic bags, pet bottles and broken electronic devices. JCI Maldives hopes with the initiative more people will become aware on the importance of keeping the environment clean and that more people do their bit in contributing to a cleaner city.

World Clean-up Day is a global social action programme aimed at combating the global solid waste problem, including the problem of marine debris. Every year, September 15 is marked as the World Clean-up Day. World Clean-up Day is held over the course of a 24-hour period, usually in mid-September.

There are numerous organisations that facilitate and host World Clean-up Day events globally. Like Earth Day, World Clean-up Day is non-partisan, apolitical and is not affiliated with any national or global political party or discrete ideology.
