Running mate of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has expressed the government of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has achieved 99% of the religious pledges in the opposition coalition manifesto.
At a gathering held at Dharubaaruge Convention Centre by Islamic scholars, the running mate of the ruling party stated there is nothing that can be done by the opposition in terms of enhancing Islam in Maldives. Shaheem lauded the efforts of President Yameen in securing and maintaining Islamic principles. In this regard, Shaheem stated the freedom for religious scholars were given by the government seeking the importance of spreading Islamic knowledge.
Moreover, Shaheem noted during former government of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the state received only USD 909,244 as Zakat, while nearly USD 4 million was attained as Zakat in the current presidency.
During the address, Shaheem stated some people worked to defame the Islam in the country, during the MDP government, adding it is crucial to re-elect President Yameen for a second term in office to maintain the Islamic values in Maldives.
