Polling of Presidential Election closes, Maldives awaits results

Elections Commission of Maldives has closed the polling stations and prepares to count the ballots.

Even though the polling stations were closed, opportunity to vote will be given to voters in queue before 1900hrs and counting will begin as soon as every voter in line cast their votes, according to Elections Commission.

A total of 472 ballot boxes were placed across Maldives and in 4 countries abroad. A total of 262,135 people are eligible to vote in the presidential election, according to the Elections Commission.

Almost all ballot boxes were opened by the prescribed time in the presence of polling station officials. Voting took place in the presence of representatives of candidates, observers and monitors. In this regard, 945 representatives of candidates, 2,610 local observers and international observers from 11 agencies, and 3,329 local monitors and a number of international monitors were active in the election.

According to authorities, no incidence of irregularity was reported across the country during voting.
