Ibrahim Mohamed Solih declares victory, appeals for swift transition

President-Elect of Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has appealed to incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to facilitate the swift transition of powers, in accordance with the constitution.

Declaring victory at a press conference, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih assured citizens he would be the president for all Maldivians, despite their political ideology. During the press conference, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih congratulated all opposition supporters and thanked them for the continuous support during the campaign trail. Meanwhile, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also called every Maldivian to cooperate with his efforts to change the situation of the country.

Following the victory and the announcement of provisional results, supporters of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held several activities in celebration. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih won an overwhelming majority with 134,616 votes which is a lead of 38,484 votes over the incumbent president and Presidential Candidate of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who won 96,132 votes, according to interim results published by Elections Commission of Maldives.
