IPU welcomes peaceful election in Maldives, urges smooth transition of power

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has congratulated President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on his victory in the Presidential Election 2018, calling for the final results to be announced as soon as possible to respect the will of the people.

In a congratulatory statement, IPU stated it has been closely following the political situation in Maldives, saluting the peaceful conduct of the election and the outgoing president’s pledge to ensure a smooth transition of power. In the statement, IPU expressed hope to work with the president-elect and the parliament to help build a more constructive relationship between the presidency, the parliament and the judiciary, and to create a better mutual understanding of the respective roles of each institution.

IPU is an organisation made up of national parliaments from around the world aiming to protect and build global democracy through political dialogue and concrete action. Currently, IPU is comprised of 178 member parliaments and 12 associate members.
