Elections Commission of Maldives has announced the official results of the 2018 Presidential Election.
The commission has officially announced Presidential Candidate of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been elected as the 7th President of Maldives, with 58.40% of votes cast in the presidential election. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih secured the election by a wide margin of 38,652 votes. He received 134,705 votes, while Presidential Candidate of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom received 96-thousand-52 votes.
The election recorded an impressive voter turnout of 233,889, which makes up 89% of the 262,135 people who were eligible to cast votes in the September 23 polls. Although 3,132 invalid votes were cast, it is an improvement when compared to the 2013 Presidential Election, in which the number of invalid votes exceeded 6,000, according to the Elections Commission.
Within seven days from the day of the election, the Elections Commission should confirm the results of the election, and publicly announce the official results of the election and publish it in the government gazette, according to Article 61 of the Elections General Act. Additionally, the individual elected from the election should also be disclosed in the announcement.
The seven-day deadline comes to a close tomorrow.
