We rest assured, the decision of the citizens would be upheld: MDP

Spokesperson of the president-elect, Mariya Ahmed Didi has stated the new government rests assured the decision made by the citizens in the presidential election would be upheld. The spokesperson made the statement addressing the daily press briefing held by Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).

When asked about the recent allegations by ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) questioning the validity of the September 23 polls, Mariya Ahmed Didi said transition procedures are progressing smoothly, despite such allegations. In this regard, she added interim committees of MDP are meeting with respective government ministries, who continue to assure their full cooperation for a smooth transition of power.

Noting the incumbent president has already conceded defeat in a televised speech which was broadcast live, the spokesperson said even cabinet ministers maintain there is no material grounds to change the outcome of the election. Mariya noted under relevant laws, the Civil Service Commission (CSC) is mandated to facilitate the transition, even in the event of a political appointee refusing to oblige.

When asked about Elections Commission overturning its previous decision about the validity of the disputed seats in parliament, Mariya reiterated MDP had always perceived the 12 seats are valid. She congratulated the commission for having the strength to come out and implement its autonomy in making the declaration.

Shedding light about investigations into corruption allegations, Mariya said Maldivians completed the past five years with strong suspicions about corruption within the government. She reiterated the incoming government's call for anyone who has information or evidence to come forward and assist the investigations. In this regard, Mariya noted even foreign parties continue to provide information about politically exposed persons.

At the briefing Mariya also added the White House National Security Committee has congratulated President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and has expressed their desire to see both countries working together to achieve progress and democracy. She further highlighted Sri Lankan President Maithitipala Sirisena has also congratulated the president-elect and expressed hope for stronger cooperation between the two countries.
